Irresistible Leaders

What is Irresistible Leadership

Irresistible leaders are those rare magnets that others are drawn to and want to follow without knowing why.

Irresistible leaders change lives and the world. They change lives by helping others become more deeply engaged and contribute far more than they thought they were capable of. They change the world by turning their followers into irresistible leaders who go on to grow even more irresistible leaders. The whole thing becomes a big positive feedback loop.

Irresistible leaders never die. When others talk about irresistible leaders they do it with warmth in their heart and joy in their voice even if the experience was years ago; sometimes well after they are dead (think of Ghandi, Ed Hillary and Peter Blake).

When people talk about these people and others you can almost see them grow, their posture straightens and their eyes shine as they recall how these people made them feel.

Examples of Irresistible Leaders

Bryan Jackson

Bryan founded King Toyota, one of the most successful motor vehicle dealers in New Zealand; he has been the Chairman of Hutt Valley Health Corporation, and he is currently on the board of several organisations including Vehicle Testing New Zealand and Land Transport New Zealand. Bryan knows people perhaps better than any other business person I know. Bryan was brought up in the business school where the most important thing was customer satisfaction. Now he's changed his mind!

Geoff Bascand

Geoff Bascand is the Chief Executive of Statistics New Zealand. Geoff is managing to develop Statistics, even when other government departments are being squeezed. He says: "Be yourself, know yourself and be true to yourself". He sees himself as a conductor. His job is to get the most out of himself and out of others. He says leadership can be tough, tougher than he expected.

Mike Hollings

Mike Hollings is the Chief Executive of Te Kura (previously called the Correspondence School). Mike's says: "Know yourself. Your people need to know you as a personality. Warts and all! Work to your strengths and make sure that other people know them too. Know your weaknesses and find people who compliment you." According to Mike, his success is largely due to his ability to recruit people who complement his skills.

Wes Brown

Wes Brown, started and grew one of New Zealand's largest business support companies now called Datam. Wes talks about the importance of 1. Authenticity, 2. Optimism and 3. A shared vision of a desirable future.

Peter Adams

Peter developed NZAID into one of the most respected agencies of its type in the world before retiring recently. In Peter's view the first priority of management is to manage oneself. “The one thing I have free is the attitude I get up with in the morning. I have the choice. I could decide to think too much about myself, be anxious and ambitious or I could take the ego out of it."

Pat Waite

Pat has had many high profile jobs, including CEO Public Trust, Head of Bank of New Zealand Austraila and President of Institute of Chartered Accountants New Zealand. I have always admired the way Pat operates and I hope that his example will inspire someone else to follow his lead.
