Irresistible Leadership Goes Public

For the only the second time Bruce Holland is opening his Irresistible Leadership Program to the public.

The aim of the Program

The aim of the Program is to turn very good managers into Irresistible Leaders by making small changes to their thinking and behaviours and to establish these as new winning habits. Once achieved, Irresistible leaders change lives and the world. They change lives by helping others become more deeply engaged so they contribute far more than they thought they were capable of. They change the world through a snowball effect by turning their followers into irresistible leaders who in turn grow even more leaders.

Who

  • Only very good managers who want to become irresistible
  • Only those prepared to work hard, dig deep and be open-minded
  • Limited to 15 participants, first come basis.

Delivery

  • Eight half-day workshops, readings and individual coaching
  • Participants are required to do preparatory work for each workshop
  • Individual additional coaching by phone and email to support participants into new leadership behaviours at work
  • Participants receive a free copy of Bruce Holland's book, "The Buddha Hunters - secrets of how Irresistible Leaders liberate the human spirit at work."

  • 8 half-day workshops over 6 months (4 days for 6 months learning)
  • Workshops will be held a convenient 3 minute walk from Wellington Airport and with good free parking.

Price

  • $2,950 per person (plus GST)
  • 15% discount for additional people, after the first one from the same organisation
  • Registration due on or before 25/6/2012 (manager@virtual.co.nz)
  • The timing is designed for those people who may have a little budget left from 2011-12 as well as those who have money in their new 2012-13 budgets. It is the best money they will ever spend.

What is Irresistible Leadership

Irresistible leaders are those rare people that others are drawn to and want to follow without knowing why. See some local examples.

Irresistible leaders change lives and the world. They change lives by helping others become more deeply engaged so they contribute far more than they thought they were capable of. Through a snowball effect, they change the world by turning their followers into irresistible leaders who in turn grow even more leaders.

Irresistible leaders never die. When others talk about irresistible leaders they do it with warmth in their heart and in their voice even if the experience was years ago; sometimes well after they are dead (think of Gandhi, Ed Hillary and Peter Blake). When people talk about irresistible leaders you can almost see them grow, their posture straightens and their eyes shine as they recall how these people made them feel.

Most managers are middling. A few are very good. The difference in behaviour between very good and irresistible is quite small. Irresistible leaders have developed habits of thinking and behaving that are slightly different. These habits, although only slight, lead to vastly improved results over time.

Secrets of irresistible leaders

Ten secrets of Irresistible Leaders.

Modules

1. Liberating Human Energy

The first half-day workshop and reading is about increasing your level of human energy and increasing the energy levels in your people. It is a highly practical workshop that will show that every person has been a leader at some time in their life. It will show the surprisingly simple things that irresistible leaders do that make such a difference. It's about developing human energy by tapping into its source: body, head, heart and soul. This module will provide much of the intellectual underpinning of the Program.

Content includes

  • The material and ideas in this module are basic to the Program
  • What Irresistible Leaders know that others don't including how Kiwis think and behave in their own special way
  • Creating the conditions for increased human energy
  • Irresistible Leadership behaviours.

Why this is important

  1. Developing human energy is vital because there is enormous amounts of discretionary effort withheld at work. Recent research about New Zealand workplaces by Gallup showed that only 17% of people are engaged while 68% are disengaged and 15% are actively disengaged. Irresistible leaders are the ultimate engagers.
  2. The module will build your confidence by showing you that every person has already been a leader at some time in their life.
  3. It will show the surprisingly simple things that irresistible leaders do that make such a difference. It's mostly about developing human energy.
  4. Kiwis are motivated by different things and work together in different ways to what we find in most textbooks and programs.

2. The Power of the Subconscious Mind

The second half-day workshop and reading is designed to help you understand the power of your subconscious mind and how to access this incredible power to help make you irresistible. Most managers only develop their conscious mind. They assume that's where their power comes from. This module shows that most power comes from the subconscious mind. Irresistible leaders constantly work on their subconscious, especially their self-image and self-talk. They know that most of their power comes from their subconscious mind and they will never be more powerful than the mental pictures they have of themselves.

Content includes

  • How the subconscious works
  • Accessing the power of the subconscious
  • Visualising what you want
  • The power of self-talk
  • How to stop sabotaging yourself.

Why this is important

  1. Inside everyone there is a Golden Buddha but sometimes our self-talk and personal image keep it hidden from view.
  2. The picture we hold in our subconscious mind drives our behaviours and success; or holds us back.
  3. After people have discovered their own Golden Buddha they start searching for it in others and this puts them well on the way to Irresistible Leadership by unleashing this power in everyone.

3. Understanding Ourselves and Others Using Herrmann's Brain Dominance Index (HBDI)

The third half-day workshop and reading is designed to help you understand your thinking preferences and how this drives how you communicate, what your needs are and your values. The part of your brain that you prefer to think with largely determines your strengths and weaknesses.

Participants will be officially profiled with Herrmann's Whole Brain Index to identify their thinking preferences. Herrmann's Whole Brain Index shows that people think in fundamentally different ways and need to be led differently.

Content includes

  • Understanding your Herrmann profile under normal conditions and under pressure
  • Understanding your strengths and how to play to them
  • Understanding your weaknesses and how to cover them
  • Understanding that others have different thinking preferences, strengths, needs and frustrations
  • How to understand, appreciate and get along with people you find difficult
  • How to communicate more effectively with each type of profile
  • How to do better presentations.

Why this is important

  1. This module shows that people are different. Some are blue, others are green, red and yellow. Each colour has different needs, strengths and weaknesses, and different communication styles. Treat them the way you like to be treated and you will succeed about a quarter of the time. Treat them the way they like to be treated and you'll succeed every time.
  2. When you understand their colour, you understand their strengths and weaknesses, and can use their strengths more often and deliberately and cover their weaknesses by building much stronger multi-coloured teams.
  3. Also when you know a person's colour you can communicate (and sell and influence) in ways that go straight to their psyche. It's like magic!

4. Making the Most of Your Genius Factor

The fourth half-day workshop and reading is designed to help you find your Genius Factor. We all have a Genius Factor but most of us have no idea what it is. Occasionally we trip over it and succeed way beyond our expectations. The trouble is, it happens so infrequently that we tend to disregard it and don't learn from it. Once you know your Genius Factor you can use it more often and deliberately then see your success bloom. What is more important, once you have found your Genius Factor you will start looking for Genius in other people, and you will find it, then they will succeed beyond their expectations.

Content includes

  • Identifying your Genius Factor
  • Learning how to use your Genius more effectively
  • Helping others see their Genius Factor and use it.

Why this is important

  1. The most important thing you can do is to use your Genius Factor more often. The next most important thing is to help others find and use their Genius.
  2. Irresistible leaders know they have a Genius Factor and when they use it they add extraordinary value to the world.
  3. When people understand their Genius Factor and use it deliberately, there is no limit. This module provides a process to identify and utilise your untapped Genius that will drive you towards Irresistible Leadership.
  4. Your Genius creates joy and success for you when it is used in the right situation.

5. Confidence, Influence & Personal Power

The fifth half-day workshop and reading is about increasing your confidence, influence and personal power. Many people assume that some people are born confident and others aren't. This workshop will show you that this is not true. Instead confident people have learned to behave in certain ways that others see as confident and are drawn to, at a very deep level without understanding why. These behaviours are easily learned and accessible to all of us.

Content includes

  • Learning from the most influential person in your life
  • Learning confident behaviours
  • Understanding the power of words
  • Developing your Confidence Plan
  • Measuring your Personal Power.

Why this is important

  1. All humans have a need for confidence. We are attracted to it without even knowing why. When confidence is like a magnet we call it personal power.
  2. With this confidence we can influence others and set ourselves on the path to Irresistible Leadership.

6. Collaboration and Networks in Business

The sixth half-day workshop and reading increases your ability to work collaboratively and in networks. Irresistible Leaders understand that no matter how strong they are, they need others to succeed. They know what science is telling us, that we are far more connected than most business people understand; that cooperation is the natural order and that networks are the basis of all organisations no matter how hierarchical they appear or how tall their organisational tree is.

Content includes

  • The business case for deeper cooperation and collaboration
  • Understanding the golden rules of collaboration
  • Discover how to remove barriers and silos that reduce connectedness
  • Developing a Relationship Plan with individuals and groups that are important to you
  • The golden rules of networking: the laws of Small worlds and Weak ties, Metcalfe's law, the law of Connectors & the law of Proximity
  • Learn how to map the formal and informal networks in your workplace
  • Your plan for stronger networks.

Why this is important

Irresistible Leaders know that collaboration is replacing competition and that networks are replacing hierarchy as the dominant organising principles. They know it's the space in between people that makes the most difference; instead of seeing emptiness, they see emotions, vibrations, energy, trust, communication, synergy and love.

Many managers assume they are managing an organisation chart, actually they are managing a series of living networks that respond very differently from organisation chart. Irresistible leaders know that their organisation does not work like the organisation chart says it should. It actually works as a series of networks inside and outside.

In the last 10 years a whole new science of networks has been developed; most managers do not know about this and therefore miss out on a powerful new way of working. Strong networks are vital to your success but until recently they have been hit and miss. Your success as an Irresistible Leader depends on working this way.

7. Your Personal Power Program

The seventh half-day workshop and reading brings all your learning from the other modules together and sets out your Action Plan for the next 3 months. It provide you with a monthly monitoring sheet so you can monitor your continuing progress towards Irresistible Leadership.

Content includes

  • Your life purpose
  • Your central beliefs
  • Your 10 year priorities
  • Your Action Plan, including your 3 month commitments
  • Your Personal Monthly Monitoring Sheet.

Why this is important

In this module you bring together all of the learning from the previous modules and develop a Personal Power Program including commitments that you will work to achieve over the next 3 months and report on at the Review and Accountability workshop.

Formulating your Personal Power Program increases your focus, clarity, self-discipline and accountability so that you are far more likely to achieve what you have committed to. Putting it all together for a positive future

8. Review and Accountability Workshop

The eighth half-day workshop is scheduled 3 months later. During the three month leading up to this workshop the facilitator will contact you by telephone and/or email to check on your progress and help you sort out problems or barriers to you achieving Irresistible Leadership.

This workshop is designed to increase your accountability by reviewing your progress towards your Personal Power Plan and Action Plan of personal commitments. It is also where you will agree to any additional actions or amendments necessary to achieving Irresistible Leadership.

Content includes

  • Reflections on life purpose
  • Any changes to central beliefs
  • Any changes to 10 year priorities
  • Report on achievement of 3 month commitments
  • Agree any additional actions to achieving Irresistible Leadership.

Why this is important

This module extends the fourth dimension of time and therefore improves the chances that the changes you make will become life-long habits needed for Irresistible Leadership.

Client comments

What would you say to someone else considering doing the Public Irresistible Leadership Program:

  • "Incredibly insightful; changed my perspective on my career and personal life. Working at how people want to be treated, focus on their strengths not weakness. Positive and optimistic outlook. The program was a holistic, humanistic approach that benefitted from meeting regularly - not a one-day wonder. It was certainly the most effective program by far - 5 out of 5." Clare Savage, National Field Manager, Retail Institute.

  • '"The program is outstanding and I recommend it to other colleagues. The pre-readings were though provoking, ensuring our workshop discussions were productive. The workshops were relaxed and encouraged openness and frankness. I got a great deal out of them. It is beneficial and enlightening to interact with high performing individuals of different industries and backgrounds. The group provides insights, experiences and ideas that may have never occurred to me. One of the best programs I've been on - 5 out of 5." Paul Nisbet, Regional Director Sports and Events, Auckland Council.

  • "Do it. Be prepared to work hard and it will change your life. It is about creating behaviour change. It's hard work. Even if you don't want to delve deep, it makes you. And that's exactly what I needed - someone to provide a safe environment which creates the opportunity to reach my potential. 4 out of 5" Pam Govan, Child, Youth and Family.

  • "Very positive, relevant, thought-provoking program. It was excellent for affirmation, challenge, to be more questioning, openness of mind. Absolutely applicable to my life and job. Readings were logical, well presented, readable, relevant. One of the best programs I've been on - 5 out of 5." Sharron Cole, CEO, Midwifery Council.

  • "If you are looking for something different that allows you to reexamine personal aspects of leadership: then this program is for you. You get out of it what you put in. If you dive deep you will find pearls of wisdom and insight. Facilitation was very good and the pre-reading very helpful. The person orientated approach was refreshing. One of the best programs I've been on - 5 out of 5." Andrew Charnock, CEO, Occupational Therapy Board of New Zealand.

Program design principles

Leadership matters but in many ways we believe leadership development is on the wrong track, so we have challenged many basic assumptions and come up with something new and different that clients tell us it is refreshing and new.

  1. Efficiency. The Program is cleverly designed so you get 6 months development by investing in only 4 days of workshops. The Program is a series of 8 half-day workshops every two weeks, supported by readings distributed before hand. During the two-week intervals between workshops participants practice their new skills on real life issues in their own work. This drives home the learnings and makes them real. The last workshop is scheduled 3 months after the 7th workshop and is a Review and Accountability workshop. As a result the Program is constantly in front of participants for 6 months (long enough to change habits) but the actual amount of time in workshops is only 4 days.

  2. Drawing out rather than changing. Most leadership development programs assume you have to change people. We don't believe you can change people all that much. We don't see it as "changing" you or "fixing" you; it is more about reminding you of who you are, and drawing out the greatness that already exists inside. With the possible exception of a few "trace-elements" we expect to find all the knowledge, skills and experience needed within. However, most of us contribute only a fraction of our potential at work; we're like the mud-covered golden Buddha. Over the years we have accepted bits of negativity (mud) that people we trusted (teachers, parents, managers) have flicked at us; worse we have flicked mud at ourselves through our negative self-talk and personal doubts. This program is designed to crack open the mud and let the golden Buddha shine through more brightly.

  3. Peer-to-peer. Most managers don't like being trained or told what to do. The Program sidesteps this whole issue because we don't train; we facilitate and managers learn largely from their peers who share the same daily experiences and issues. We introduce new ideas as readings before workshops, then, during workshops, we get people talking and sharing their experiences and in the process they learn from each other.

  4. Your ideas matter. The facilitator has thought deeply about the qualities of Irresistible Leadership and presents his views clearly in the readings issued before each workshop. However, he has no need that you agree with him, indeed he would be disappointed if you did. What he wants is that you clarify your thoughts about Irresistible Leadership and determine how you will achieve it.

  5. Positive psychology. The Program focuses on strengths, not weaknesses. The aim is to make each person feel stronger because strong people look for the strengths in others while weak people look for weaknesses in others and make them feel dependent.

  6. Measures of success. At the start of the Program participants ask at least four people they trust (ideally including their manager and direct reports) to look for changes in specific behaviours they want to make during the Program. At the end of the Program these people report on whether these behaviours were observed. Also, participants monitor their progress monthly in specific areas during the Program and followup on each other's progress at the end.

  7. Fourth dimension. Many development programs disregard the fourth dimension of time, yet this is vital for changing habits. It takes about 4 months to change a lifelong thinking habit.

  8. It achieves permanent change. Research shows 99% of people on development courses make no permanent changes as a result. This Program is different. It has been cleverly designed to span over 5 months, by which time you will be doing your new Irresistible Leadership habit without even thinking about it. It requires you to monitor your progress monthly as you go. It will therefore put you ahead of 99% of your peers.

Facilitator

Bruce Holland was trained in finance (ACA, B.Com in Economics and Accounting) and has a background in business (senior roles in major corporates including Group Strategic Planning Manager at the Bank of New Zealand). As a result he understands business and the pressures managers come under; and his approaches are based on realism and things that work.

Bruce is also highly respected as an innovator and currently holds the record as the most creative person in Herrmannss New Zealand data base.

Since 1992 Bruce has been an independent consultant working on what really matters in Strategy and Irresistible Leadership. His approach to Irresistible Leadership is to provide an opportunity for deep reflection; self-understanding, practice and experimentation over a period of time long enough to make permanent change at a deep level. He uses positive psychology and strength-based processes.

Bruce's facilitation helps people to draw out their spark and to be their most positive. He calls it "liberating the human spirit at work." He creates a safe learning environment that is based on trust and openness; a place where people can be themselves without fear. Bruce encourages participants to see the Irresistible Leadership Program as a step in a lifelong journey towards mastery.

Bruce has excellent oral and written communications skills. He communicates well with all levels of people. He always attempts to extract the essence and remove the jargon.

Distribution of written material

Written materials will be distributed in soft-copy using email at least one week before the relevant workshop. Participants will copy these off and insert them into a hard-covered folder that will be issued at the start of the Program. Over the Program this material along with your notes and observations will grow into a highly valuable resource for reference in the years to come.
