There are two types of action learning. Both have the same underlying principles and ground rules and mostly the same benefits. The major differences are:
These groups are like communities of interest, they are long term support cells set up around the organisation to help people grow, be more effective and solve current problems with the help of the group.
In this type of action learning the group works on multiple problems selected by the members who bring the problems to the group. Individuals commit to take action. Members self select into the action learning groups and members who depart may be replaced.
In this type, all group members focus their energies on solving a single problem propose to them by the organisation. The group may be disbanded after handling just one problem or may continue for longer if new problems are offered to them. Membership is normally determined by the organisation. The group recommends and/or implements the solution.
